On August 3, 2009, Herschel's Heterodyne Instrument for the Far Infrared, or HIFI, was switched off temporarily after an anomaly was registered. Engineers and scientists from the European Space Agency and the HIFI team are working to determine the cause and resume the instrument's observations.
